If there is anything between the teeth, then the patient needs to remove it as soon as possible. However, we treat plenty of patients with toothaches who need us to remove the bits of food or whatever is between the teeth.
We also suggest taking ibuprofen and placing a cold compress on the face for 15 minutes at a time. This will help to reduce any swelling one may have and also decrease the discomfort.
Patients might also have a toothache because of a cavity. It is common to develop tooth decay, and if an individual does not receive professional teeth cleanings on a regular basis, the chance of this only increases. We recommend that patients receive teeth cleanings at least twice a year so we can decrease the risk of future toothaches from a cavity. After all, preventing cavities is the best thing for one's health. The good news is that cavities take some time to develop, so if a patient is receiving ongoing dental care, there is a good chance we will catch the cavity before it causes any discomfort.
If someone has a cavity, an infected tooth, gum disease, or a damaged tooth, we will schedule an immediate appointment. Upon arrival, we will conduct a physical examination and take X-rays to determine what is causing the problem. We will then numb the area that needs to be treated and provide emergency treatment, so the patient can begin to feel better right away. If the patient has extensive damage, like a tooth that fell out, we can begin to address the problem by providing a temporary denture while the patient decides on the permanent solution.
