The Use of Botox in the Treatment of TMJ

Botox Bellevue, WA

There are more than three million cases of TMJ disorder every year in the United States. For many, this leads to discomfort and jaw stiffness throughout most days. However, many patients with TMJ disorder are beginning to find relief of their TMJ symptoms with Botox® treatment from a dentist.

How Botox can relieve symptoms and treat TMJ long-term

TMJ disorder does not have to hold you back from doing the things you love each day and living symptom-free. This review discusses the role Botox is playing in the treatment of TMJ disorder, including insights into what you can expect during and after Botox for TMJ.

What is TMJ disorder?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jawbone to the skull. When the TMJ does not function properly, it leads to pain and discomfort. This is known as TMJ disorder. There is a range of TMJ contributing factors, including bruxism and hereditary factors. There are several treatment options available. Botox injections are a relatively new and innovative way of treating TMJ disorder, and the results thus far are promising.

How can Botox treat TMJ?

Every case is unique, but there are certain TMJ symptoms that are more common. These symptoms include:

  • Tightness in the jaw
  • Sore cheeks and jaw
  • Facial swelling
  • Pain in the neck and ears
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Clicking noise in the jaw

More severe symptoms that indicate a serious case of TMJ include a locked jaw (inability to move the jaw) and a shocking type of pain in the jaw and surrounding area. It is important to visit a dentist if multiple symptoms exist for more than a couple of days.

What can I expect during Botox treatment?

During the consultation, the dentist and the patient can discuss treatment goals and determine how many (if any) Botox injections are necessary. The injections are either administered the same day or during a follow-up visit. This is relatively non-invasive and does not cause much discomfort. The patient can return to their normal routine once they leave the office. Results typically take several days to a week to be seen.

Are there any risks to Botox for TMJ?

All types of treatment have risks. While Botox is safe and relatively non-invasive, there are some potential risks, such as:

  • Redness at injection sites
  • Muscle pain and bruising
  • Muscle weakness

In very few instances, nausea has been reported after Botox injections for TMJ. Most patients make a recovery within twelve hours after the Botox injections. If any serious symptoms develop (such as severe discomfort), then it is important to notify the dentist as soon as possible to determine the best course of action.
